: A sexagenarian businessman from Maldives, two thirds of whose left lung was destroyed due to ailments caused by chain smoking, got a new lease of life through complicated surgery at a hospital here.
62-year-old Manik Ali had been undergoing treatment at the Kims hospital here for the last two years.
During these couple of years, Ali used to be extremely breathless and could barely walk a few steps without gasping, a hospital spokesperson said.
Of these hospital stays, at least 10 of them were in the ICU with his breathing being supported by the ventilator.
Ali had frequent lung infections and very low oxygen levels.
"Finally, Ali walked out of the hospital on October 10 as a completely different man - he was no longer breathless and had normal oxygen levels. He no longer had the fear of getting readmitted to hospitals," the spokesperson said.
Being exposed to the strain from vagaries of the weather and the sea, Ali began smoking 20 cigarettes a day even at a very young age.
His lung condition was diagnosed as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) with Bronchiectasis of the left lung.
COPD is a condition where the lung becomes weak with increasing age and is most commonly caused by smoking as well as by pollution or chemical exposure.
Bronchiectasis is destruction of the lung leading to sacs of pus.
