A newborn girl child has been rescued from the premises of the Cuttack railway station, railway police sources said.
The 'abandoned' baby believed to be either a day or two old was found lying wrapped in a piece of cloth in front of the station manager's cabin, they said.
Railway police sources said the station manager's peon first stumbled upon the baby yesterday morning and alerted other railway officials, including police.
A frantic search was immediately made inside the station premises to trace the guardian of the baby but it turned out to be futile.
Finding no other alternative, the railway officials got in touch with an orphanage of the city, which in turn rescued the baby.
"We took the baby to the hospital and she was found to be healthy and fine", said Narayan Shukla, an employee of the orphanage.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the railway police have made a station diary entry and are questioning the local people and vendors to trace her mother, who allegedly abandoned the baby.
It may be recalled here that two girl children of less-than-a-week-old were rescued from the Cuttack railway station about a year back.
