The National Green Tribunal has directed Deputy Commissioner of Faridabad to look into the issue of dumping of garbage in a pond at village Sihi in the district and submit a report within three months.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel asked the official to look into the matter and take appropriate action in accordance with law within one month.

"Allegation in this application is that a pond at village Sihi in Faridabad district, which is an existing water body, is being destroyed by dumping garbage. Existence of the pond is recorded in revenue record. Illegal closing of pond is being done by Municipal Corporation, Faridabad.

"In view of above, we direct the Deputy Commissioner, Faridabad to look into the matter and take appropriate action in accordance with law within one month. Report of the action taken may be furnished to this tribunal for further consideration within three months by e-mail," the bench said.

The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by Faridabad resident Mahesh Kumar alleging that a pond at village Sihi in Faridabad district, which is an existing water body, is being destroyed by dumping garbage.

The plea claimed that illegal dumping in the pond, existence of which is mentioned in revenue record, was being done by the municipal corporation of Faridabad.

It said that water bodies are required to be protected for the sake of healthier environment, and dumping was being done in violation of green laws, including the guidelines for preserving the ground water issued by Central Ground Water Authority and the provision of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
