NHRC recommends Rs 5 lakh compensation to family of B'desh

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a fresh letter recommending to the Union Home Ministry a Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family of a teenaged Bangladeshi girl who was killed allegedly by a BSf jawan while illegally crossing the Indo-Bangladesh border in 2011.
Fifteen-year-old Felani Khatun was shot dead allegedly by BSF constable Amiya Ghosh while she and her father were on their way to their village in Bangladesh through Cooch Behar-Anantapur border in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram on January 7, 2011.
In its July 22 order, the Commission has directed the Home Ministry to compensate the family and file a compliance report in this regard within six weeks.

"We had issued the order a few months back. Recently, we have merely reiterated it in view of a BSF directive asking its men to exercise restraint while dealing with unarmed women and children," an NHRC official said.
Recently, the Supreme Court had sought a response from the Centre on a plea seeking a probe by CBI or Special Investigating Team (SIT) into the girl's killing.
It also issued a notice to BSF on the petition filed by the victim's father Nur Islam questioning the clean chit given twice by the BSF special court to the constable accused of firing upon the girl.
