Today is the World Amateur Radio day. The Union ministry of Information Technology has sponsored the programme.

While the NIAR is a renowned organisation with exemplary services in the field of amateur radio nationally, G P Sinha centre is a premier organisation doing project works in the fields of disaster management and rural development. The latter has also prepared Bihar state disaster management plan for the state government.

Briefing newsmen about the importance of ham radio, S Ram Mohan, director, NIAR said it is seen that in the time of major disasters like flood, severe cyclone, the communication system simply goes disarray as either work station gets non-functional or tower is uprooted.

What is good news is that even in the above eventuality the ham radio can be used and direction could be passed by the administration as disaster requires quick response in those vital periods. PTI AJK
