The 49-year-old star has revealed that she "begged" to director Gus Van Sant, who helmed the 1995 thriller, to give her an opportunity to play the leading lady in the film, reported Variety.
"No one thought I could do it and I think the studio didn't want me, and I think it went through a bunch of other actors.
"I called Gus and I said, 'please, give me the chance, I beg you,' because the writing was so strong," she said.
"I remember being in the classroom, doing that scene where I'm in the classroom and I'm in that suit, and you guys have to be looking up my skirt and you guys laughing. I was like, 'oh my god'. We were all kids. It was crazy, but it was so much fun," she said.
