Nifty breaches 10,000-mark briefly, ends lower

Benchmark Nifty broke the 10,000- points barrier for the first time today, but failed to hold on to the historic level as investors booked profit in recent gainers.
Participants also turned cautious ahead of the two-day Federal Reserve meeting and monitored major corporate earnings.
Overseas, European and Asian stocks witnessed mixed trend amid peak earnings season.
The 50-share Nifty opened higher at 10,010.55 and rose further to a historic high of 10,011.30 before ending at 9,964.55, a marginal fall of 1.85 points, or 0.02 percent.
It saw an intra-day movement of about 62.20 points.
The Nifty midcap and smallcap indices rose by 0.40 per cent and 0.11 per cent, respectively.
Sector-wise, Media fell 1.14 per cent, followed by Pharma (0.50 per cent), Energy (0.43 per cent), FMCG (0.42 per cent) and Auto (0.33 per cent)
Gainers included Metal (1.26 per cent), PSU Bank (0.73 per cent), Bank (0.41 per cent), Private Bank (0.40 per cent), Realty (0.38 per cent), Infra (0.33 per cent), Finance Services (0.32 per cent).
Major index losers were Zee, Ultratech Cement, Tech Mahindra, Lupin, Tata Motor, Tata Motors DVR, Eicher Motors and Coal India.
Index gainers included Vedanta, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Hindalco, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel, TCS, Bharti Infratel, Yes Bank and ACC.
A total of 748 scrips advanced, 952 declined, while 77 remained unchanged.
Total securities that hit their price bands were 118.
Turnover in the cash segment fell to Rs 25,650.96 crore from Rs 26,875.25 crore yesterday.
A total of 16,435.19 lakh shares changed hands in 9,356,368 trades. The market capitalisation of listed firms on the NSE stood at Rs 1,30,56,069.30 crore.
