The Nifty resumed lower and 8,356.20 and dropped further to 8,335.00.
However, it recovered afterwards to 8,427.80 on the back of strong rise in European markets after the European Central Bank (ECB) proposed that it may speed up its one trillion euro bond-buying movement slightly to account for lower market liquidity in high summer before ending at 8,365.65, showing a mere loss of 8 points, or 0.10 per cent.
Major Nifty gainers were UltraTech Cement (2.46 per cent), followed by Hero MotoCorp (2.39 per cent), VEDL (1.85 per cent), Wipro (1.53 per cent) and Infosys (1.47 per cent).
Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 15,809.06 crore from Rs 15,233.70 crore yesterday.
A total of 7,727.71 lakh shares changed hands in 68,05,802 trades and the total market capitalisation of the NSE stood at Rs 99,39,920 crore.
