Nissan India today reiterated its resolve to corner 5 per cent of the car market here by 2020 and announced expansion of its product-line with two more models this year -- an electric hybrid crossover model of its popular SUV the X-Trail and sportscar GT-R.
The electric crossover hybrid X-Trail will be the first fully electric SUV in the country, Nissan, that has been world leaders in the electric vehicles, said.
"Our super-fast racing car the Nissan GT-R will storm the Indian roads in September, and the new X-Trail Hybrid (2-liter petrol engine) before the end of the financial year. India will be the fourth market in the world after Japan, Thailand and Indonesia where Nissan will have introduced the X-Trail Hybrid," Nissan India president Guillaume Sicard told reporters at the Delhi Auto Expo here this evening.
On the targeted market share, he said, "We want to reiterate our commitment to India. Towards achieving 5 per cent market share by 2020, we are keen to expand our product portfolio with these two more models.
"The 5 per cent market share by 2020 is not dream but a vision. Because we do not believe in meeting the expectations but surpassing them," Sicard added.
Bringing these two standout models to this market shows Nissan is a brand that is going places, he said, adding each of these models have their own strengths as are great examples of Nissan's engineering and technological expertise, embodying the brand promise of innovation and excitement.
Sicard also said the company has heavily invested in the country with its massive plant in Chennai, which is the largest under its alliance with French auto major Renault and the third largest globally for the company. The 4-lakh unit per annum Chennai plant last month had rolled out the one millionth car, he noted.
The plant can add 80,000 more a year by adding a new shift. The company has already sold over 2.5 lakh cars from the Chennai plant and currently enjoys around 2.5 per cent market share in the country.
Nissan's flagship GT-R sportscar delivers blistering performance. It is equally at home in real-world driving conditions as it is on the racetrack where it has shattered numerous records.
The current GT-R's twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 petrol
engine can attain a speed of 100 kmph in under 3 seconds and can produce 550PS and 632Nm of torque.
The GT-R, also known as the Godzilla and the Supercar killer, also boasts an array of on-board technology and unrivalled handling ease.
The X-Trail Hybrid delivers sprightly driving response right off the line due to the 2.0L engine with added punch provided by its electric motor. Intelligent Dual Clutch Control is Nissan's original, highly efficient hybrid system that drives the wheels and regenerates electricity by using one motor.
With one of the two clutches completely separating the motor from the engine, the system enables EV mode driving in high-speed situations with highly efficient energy regeneration.
The Oragadam, near Chennai plant employs over 7,000 and assembles a cross-segment line-up including the popular Sunny sedan, Micra hatchback and the SUV Terrano, as well as the Datsun Go and Go+.
Meanwhile, Nissan India managing director Arun Malhotra announced two special edition of the Terrano and the Micra to be launched during the ICC World Cup T20 cricket next month. Last November, it can be noted that Nissan entered into a multi-million dollar 8-year-long global sponsorship of the world cup cricket with the International Cricket Council.
Meanwhile Nissan's sub-brand Datsun today showcased a crossover concept model of its eponymous brand Go+ at the Auto Expo, as part of its next phase of development in the domestic market where it entered two years ago.
The company now sells Datsun Go and Datsun Go+ in the domestic market. But its international head Vincent Cobee said the company is very keen on bringing in more brands to India but did not offer a time-line.
He said the Datsun Go-cross Concept is a cool crossover that brings a new sense of style, adventure and fun to the Datsun line-up.
He also said the crossover concept of Go+ is the second one from the brand after Datsun redi-Go Concept presented at Delhi Auto Expo 2014.
