The Madras High Court today put an end to the controversy arising out of a community calling itself "Kurumbar", holding there was no mention in the Presidential notification of a community by that name, particularly under the category of Scheduled Tribe of Most Backward Classes.
The Division Bench, comprising Justices R Sudhakar and Pushpa Sathyanarayana remitted the matter back to the Revenue Divisional Officer, Thiruvannamalai and ordered the Director, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department to instruct all competent authorities to desist from referring to "Kurumbar" name for issuing Scheduled Tribe community Certificate.
The matter pertains to the RDO rejecting the issue of community certificates under the name 'Kurumans' to one E Mani and his brother Sampath and their children, holding that they belong only to "Kurumbar" Community.
The brothers then moved the High Court.
Setting aside the RDO'S order, the bench said "Even assuming that there were certificates issued to one or more persons in the name of Kurumbar community with or without the tag of MBC, authorities shall verify independently on the basis of material placed before them by the applicants and follow the procedure prescribed in the October 15 2012 Government Order on issuance of community certificates."
It then remitted the matter back to the RDO, Thiruvannamalai.
