A day after DMK raised questions about farmers' loan recovery, Tamil Nadu Government today said it has not taken any action to pay back loans waived in 2006.
It was responding to DMK President M Karunanidhi's poser whether it was true that farmers were being directed by some credit societies to pay back waived loans.
The state government "has not taken any action as claimed by Karunanidhi," Cooperation Minister Sellur K Raju said in a statement here.
Citing reports, the DMK chief had yesterday said a cooperative credit society in Tanjavur had sent a notice to Suseela, a Thiruvaiyaru-based farmer, seeking repayment of a farm loan that was waived in 2006.
"This loan was given beyond the loan waiver date of March 31, 2006 and a notice has been issued for this only. Like Karunanidhi said, no notice had been issued for waived loans," Raju said.
Charging the previous DMK Government with leaving the Cooperative sector in "tatters", he said it received a fillip only after the J Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK Government took over in 2011.
Primary cooperative societies now had deposits of Rs 42,625 crore while Rs 16,251 crore had been disbursed as crop loan benefiting 37 lakh farmers, he said and accused Karunanidhi of trying to "malign" the government.
