No role in declassification of Netaji files: NAC

The National Advisory Council (NAC) has clarified that its chairperson plays no role in the declassification of secret documents relating to the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
"I have been desired to inform that this matter does not relate to the chairperson, National Advisory Council," said a letter written by Dhiraj Srivastava, private secretary to NAC chairperson, while replying to a legal notice from Kolkata-based NGO India's Smile.
The activists had issued a legal notice to NAC demanding declassification of all documents, including top-secret files, relating to Netaji so that the mystery surrounding his disappearance could be solved.

They have also filed a PIL in the Division Bench of Calcutta High Court. It is expected to come up before the Bench comprising Chief justice Arun Mishra and Justice Joymalya Bagchi tomorrow.
The Prime Minister's Office had earlier refused to furnish data on documents and records it held on Netaji's disappearance, saying the disclosure would harm India's relations with foreign countries.
The petition demands a judicial review on whether the documents should remain secret in public interest.

When under house arrest by the Britishers, Netaji had escaped from India in 1941 to seek international support for the country's freedom struggle. After organising the Indian National Army with Japanese help he went missing in 1945.

He was last seen at the Bangkok Airport on 17th August 1945.
The Mukherjee Commission had rejected the opinion that he died in a plane crash in Taiwan on August 18, 1945.
