Army's Northern Command, popularly known as 'Dhruva Command' today celebrated its 44th Raising Day as its chief Lt Gen DS Hooda encouraged the troops to continue maintaining their "exalted standards" through professionalism, dedication and devotion to duty.
At a solemn ceremony at Udhampur-based Dhruva War Memorial, Lt Gen Hooda, Army Commander Northern Command, paid homage by laying a wreath on behalf of all the ranks, as a mark of respect to the martyrs who have fallen on the battlefield in service to the nation, a Defence spokesperson said.
Northern Command was raised on 17 June, 1972 after the 1971 Indo-Pak war and has the unique responsibility of guarding the nations against both Pakistan and China, he said.
Deployed in extremely inhospitable and hazardous environs including Siachen, troops of the Dhruva Command continue to serve drawing inspiration from the sage of bravery and sacrifice of their predecessors.
Other functions which marked the celebrations included special Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) meeting, drawing-cum-panting competition for children.
A Military Tattoo was held which included display by the Army motorcycle team apathy called the 'Tornadoes' and demonstration by canines with their proficiency in military related tasks.
Sky diving by paratroopers parachute motors display, horse show, Sikh martial art 'Gatka' and melodies rendition by the Army band were also performed at a function last evening.
On the occasion, Lt Gen Hooda extended his good wishes to all ranks and their families. He complimented the rank file of the command for demonstrating extraordinary endurance, steadfastness and exemplary sense of duty during counter-terrorist operations with a people-friendly approach as also in guarding the northern frontiers of the nation.
