The Class XII student of a school in Outer Delhi was detained yesterday morning after he was found loitering around in Old Delhi Railway Station, a senior police official said.

The boy did not return home on December 21 and two days later, his parents had received a call demanding Rs three crore for his release. His parents had informed police about him not returning home earlier and a case was registered.

During investigations, police found that the boy's mobile phone was active in Kolkata and a team of investigators went there but were unable to locate him.

"Yesterday, we found the boy moving in a suspicious manner and we questioned him. Initially, he tried to mislead us but then broke down and told us that he had staged his own abduction. He told us that he was not happy that he was not getting enough pocket money.

"On December 21, he had left for Kolkata from school from where he made the extortion call. He later felt that he was doing wrong and giving pain to his parents. So, he took train for Delhi," the official said.

The victim's father is a doctor.
