Delhi government today served notices to eight major construction projects, including one of the Airport Authority of India, for flouting dust pollution norms on a day it officially discussed the IIT-Kanpur report for the first time.
The proponents of the projects have been asked to deposit environment compensation penalty of Rs 50,000 each and take rectification measures. Last week, 38 other projects were slapped with similar penalties.
The list of the projects include upcoming shopping malls, extension of NIFT campus in Hauz Khas, construction of district courts. In most of the cases, foundation and structure work are underway.
During a presentation on the IIT-Kanpur report, that was submitted to the government late last month, its investigators explained the findings of the study to the the nodal minister on pollution Satyender Jain who is also the Environment Minister.
The report of the study titled 'Source Apportionment Study of PM2.5 and PM10' has identified trucks and road dust as the largest contributors behind Delhi's polluted air, and has recommended a switch to Euro VI fuel norms.
"Various suggestions of the report were discussed during the meeting. The lead investigator of the study explained the major findings of the study to the ministers and the officials, especially certain areas that needed elaboration," a top official said.
The official said that the government sponsored report will "shortly" be released in the public domain.
