"Satbeer Chaudhary poured some inflammable liquid on him and threatened to set himself ablaze but he was caught before taking any step," said Tejpal Singh, DCP Gandhinagar.
Chaudhary, a dissident candidate of NSUI, said he was disturbed because he was denied a ticket to contest election for the post of President of Students Union - Rajasthan University, he said.
A case was registered against the student for attempting suicide.
Following the incident, his supporters assembled outside the University, and police had to use mild force to disperse them.
The National Students' Union of India (NSUI), a student wing of the Congress, had declared Anil Chopra as its candidate for the post of President of Rajasthan University Students' Union.
