"NTPC will begin the production at Pakri-Barwadih coal block mine this fiscal", a source said adding that the company is also trying that output at Chatti-Bariatu block, Jharkhand also begins during 2015-16.
NTPC had said in September that it was targeting to begin production at Pakri-Barwadih coal block this year and three more blocks in the next two years.
In March, NTPC was reallotted five coal blocks that were cancelled last year by the Supreme Court.
NTPC had a few months back appointed Thriveni-Sainik JV as Mine Developer cum Operator (MDO) for Pakri Barwadih Coal Mining Project for a period of 27 years of mining operation.
The peak annual production of the mining project will be 15 million tonnes, the company had said.
In addition to developing its own domestic coal mines, NTPC is also exploring various other options, including acquisition of stake in coal mines abroad for sourcing thermal coal for addressing fuel security concerns, according to company's website.
