The technical intelligence wing of government, NTRO, today proposed creation of Indian National Cyber Registry that will act as a platform for directly connecting IT professionals with various government agencies.
"... I hereby propose creation of a Indian National Cyber Registry. The INCR will be a national repository of IT professionals," National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) Chairman Alok Joshi said at cyber security event Ground Zero Summit 2015.
The event was inaugurated by Home Minister Rajnath Singh who too expressed concerns on growing threat in cyber space.
Joshi further said that the INCR will help identifying existing resources in cyber domain through a transparent and credible system as well as develop a channelised resource base through a system of mentoring and nurturing.
Joshi expressed concern on ill effect of technologies and absence of indigenously made technical products.
"Today India has one of the largest number of information technology professionals in the world and they form a large chunk in the Silicon Valley. It is, however, sad but a harsh reality that we do not Make for ourselves," Joshi said.
Explaining INCR, Indian Infosec Consortium CEO Jiten Jain said that the platform will aim to create credible human resource in the field of cyber security who will get to work with government agencies as well as corporates looking for trusted resources.
At the event, Jain shared a report of cyber security researchers which showed phones of Army personnel, who had downloaded some mobile application related to news, had been compromised by hackers based in Pakistan.
The hackers were able to access SMS, phone calls, take picture, record voice without the owner even knowing it, the report said.
"This shows there is massive development in Pakistan's cyber capability and we need to prepare ourselves to overcome challenge," Jain said.
Lt General AK Sahni General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of South Western Army Command, at the event, said that the incident took place long back and quick action was taken.
"It's not about one malware affecting us. We are aware of fact that any malware or vulerability in technology can affect us. We have to find answer how we address them collectively. First, we have to look at using domestically developed product then we have to cautious," Sahni said.
He said that Defence personnels don't carry phones inside meetings or work place.
"We can't deny use of technology to a person but at the same time we have strict guidelines. More than malwares, leak happens through social networking sites and when we come across it strict punitive action against those found guilty," Sahni said.
