One of the conjoined twins from Odisha, who underwent a marathon separation surgery recently, has started playing and having a normal diet, while there was no remarkable change in the condition of the other, the state government said today.
The 29-month-old conjoined twins Jaga and Kalia had undergone a marathon 22-hour-long separation surgery at the AIIMS in Delhi on October 25 and 26.
The state government is in regular touch with the doctors treating them at the hospital, Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Pratap Jena said.
"There has been no remarkable change in the health condition of Kalia. As he is being administered medicines for his epileptic fits, he remains drowsy and sleepy all the time," Jena said briefing reporters on the health condition of the Kandhamal twins.
Kalia underwent a plastic surgery at the AIIMS on November 4 during which the unhealthy part of the skin flap of his skull was removed.
The condition of Jaga has improved a lot. He has started playing and is having a normal diet, the minister said.
He was taken off ventilator support on November 1 and was moved to the general ward of the AIIMS two days later.
The twins were admitted to the AIIMS, Delhi on July 14. They are likely to stay under supervision of AIIMS doctors for two more months, Jena said.
The condition, which the twins suffered from, afflicted one in 30 lakh children, of which 50 per cent die either at birth or within 24 hours, doctors had said.
In India, two similar surgeries have taken place to separate twins joined at the head, but they were not successful as the children died during the procedure.
