Lawyers of the Orissa High Court will strike work tomorrow in protest against moves by some opposition parties to bring in an impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, a senior member of its bar association said.
The boycott decision was taken at a meeting of the Orissa High Court Bar Association today.
We received requisitions for an emergent discussion on the subject by several lawyers and, accordingly, the general body of the Orissa High Court Bar Association met today and passed a unanimous resolution to this effect," Association secretary Satyabrata Mohanty.
The members expressed shock and displeasure over the recent attempts at bringing in an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India.
The leaders of several opposition parties are said to have begun consultations on initiating impeachment proceedings against the CJI.
Misra's career in the judiciary started from the Orissa High Court in the late 70s.
Members of the Association condemned the stands taken by political parties for their "narrow political mileage" and disturbing the balance among the executive, legislature and judiciary, the three key wings of democracy, Mohanty said.
He said the organisation had also requested other bar associations in the state to boycott courts on Friday.
