A government spokesman in Central African Republic says 60 people were killed during weekend attacks involving fighters believed to be loyal to former President Francois Bozize, who was ousted in a coup in March.
Guy Simplice Kodegue said today the fighting took place in the west of the country, including the town of Bossangoa near Bozize's home village.
Amy Martin, the UN's top humanitarian official in the country, said the fighting appeared to pit local self-defense groups and pro-Bozize fighters against the Seleka coalition of rebels who toppled Bozize. But she noted that the fighters squaring off against Seleka had not identified themselves.
She said 30,000 Bossangoa residents had fled into the forest and that two aid workers were killed in the town on Friday or Saturday.
