The US state of Ohio has executed a convict who had initially claimed the "gay panic" defense for a brutal murder he had committed more than three decades ago, before expressing contrition in later years.
Robert Van Hook apologized prior to his execution by lethal injection for killing David Self in 1985.
The two had gone to Self's apartment after meeting at a gay bar in the Midwestern city of Cincinnati.
"I'm very sorry for taking your brother from you. I'm no good," Van Hook told family members of Self, who were at a state prison in the Ohio town of Lucasville to witness the execution.
"I hope you now have some peace."
