Around 12.40pm an explosion was heard close to the Marina da Gloria Olympic sailing venue.
"A suspect object was found on the grass verge between the road used by the women's marathon and the marina da Gloria," an Olympic sailing spokesman reported.
"It wasn't a bomb, it was just a suspect bag and a team of bomb experts detonated it as a precaution."
The spokesperson said all the marathon runners had passed when the detonation was staged.
On the first day of competition a bomb squad detonated a suspicious package near the finish of the men's cycle race at Copacabana beach. Others have been staged since.
