According to police, in the mishap which took place at around 8 A.M., the SUV, which was carrying all the eight victims, collided with a truck on the Sirsa-Delhi national highway.
The collision was caused by low visibility due to fog in the morning when the SUV tried to overtake a vehicle and rammed into the truck which was coming from the opposite direction, police said, adding that the truck driver fled the spot after the accident.
The occupants of the SUV were shifted to a hospital, where four of them were declared dead, police said. The condition of the four injured persons was stated to be serious.
Ding SHO Vikas Kumar said that the occupants of the SUV were all residents of Muktsar in Punjab and were followers of Dera Sacha Sauda, the sect led by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is in the news at the moment due to the controversy sparked by his film 'Messenger of God'. The film, which was slated to hit the screens on Friday, is now releasing on Sunday.
The SHO said that, following a post-mortem, the bodies have been handed over to family members of the deceased and a case in the matter has been registered against the unknown truck driver.
