Thane police have arresteda man for allegedly threatening a local leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and trying to extort money from a businessman.
Sandesh Shetty, the accused, was arrested Wednesday night, said an official of anti-extortion cell of Crime Branch.
A case had been registered with Naupada police on the complaint of Avinash Jadhav, a builder who is Thane and Palghar district chief of the MNS, said inspector Sanjay Shinde.
Jadhav told police that one of his friends, a Navi Mumbai-based businessman, had received threats from Sandesh Shetty who was seeking money on behalf of the 'Pujari gang'.
