The opposition parties in West Bengal today criticized the state government for failing to mention the names of those who died of dengue in the state during the obituary references that were made in the Assembly.
Obituary references were made in the House about eminent persons who died recently. Speaker Biman Banerjee read out accounts of their lives and work.
Leader of the opposition belonging to the Congress, Abdul Mannan, questioned the reason behind omitting the reference to those who died of dengue in the state.
"Why is the state government trying to hide the truth. Why has the state government refrained from making any reference to those who died because of dengue outbreak," Mannan told reporters.
"The state government was very active while mentioning about the deaths during demonetization. But it is shying away from mentioning about those who died due to dengue. This is nothing but political opportunism," West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said.
When contacted, West Bengal Assembly speaker Biman Banerjee declined to comment on the issue.
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee, however, said, "the opposition parties have nothing to do, so they are trying to make an issue out of non issue".
