The Opposition combine of Congress and NCP, in the Maharashtra Legislature today urged Governor Vidyasagar Rao to direct the government to completely waive off crop loan of farmers in the state.
A delegation comprising Leader of Opposition in Assembly, Radha Krishna Vikhe Patil and Opposition Leader in State Council, Dhananjay Munde along with former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Chhagan Bhujbal, Sunil Tatkare (both NCP), Manikrao Thakre, Patangrao Kadam, Sanjay Dutt, Satish Chavan and Sharad Ranpise (all Congress) met the Governor at his camp residence Raj Bhawan in the afternoon and submitted a memorandum.
The memorandum said the government was "adamant" on the issue although the state was reeling under severe drought like situation, worse than what happened during the 1972 famine.
There was an acute shortage of drinking water and as many as 852 tankers were supplying water to 17 worst drought-hit districts. Also, untimely rains and hailstorm added to farmer woes, it said.
The farmers were expecting complete loan waiver but is greatly disappointed by the BJP-Sena government. Burdened by the mounting debts, as many as 3,107 farmers have committed suicide between November 2014 and October 2015, the memorandum added.
The government has not announced any major relief package during the March, July and December Legislature Session. This has affected the morale of farmers, the leaders alleged.
The memorandum urged the Governor to direct the state government to announce complete loan waiver in the larger interest of the farming community.
