Launching a veiled attack on Shiv Sena and BJP, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today alleged opposition parties were playing the communal card to polarise voters ahead of Lok Sabha and assembly elections.
"In view of forthcoming elections, opposition parties are dividing people along caste and religion lines and are trying to spread communal hatred. Communal riots in Uttar Pradesh is a recent example of this strategy," Chavan said without naming BJP and Shiv Sena at a rally at Bhokardan in Marathwada region.
Chavan said communal politics has become a major challenge to tackle for secular forces.
Referring to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's interaction with grassroot party workers in Nagpur and Pune recently, Chavan said the party cadres are now confident on taking on the opponents.
The chief minister claimed his party had fulfilled all promises made in the manifesto of 2009 assembly elections.
He asked Congress workers to spread awareness about various welfare schemes launched by the Centre and state governments.
State unit Congress president Manikrao Thakre, Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, School Education Minister Rajendra Darda also attended the rally.
On development backlog in Marathwada region, Chavan said the government was awaiting a report of the Vijay Kelkar Committee.
