Order reserved on plea by May 17 movement members against

The Madras High Court today reserved its order on a petition filed by four members of the pro-Tamil outfit, 'May 17 Movement,' challenging their detention under the stringent Goondas Act following their participation in a memorial for Eelam war victims here in May.
A division bench of Justices A Selvam and Pon Kalaiyarasan reserved the order on the Habeas Corpus plea by G Thirumurugan, leader of the movement, and three others, to be delivered on September 19.
The members of May 17, including the petitioners, were arrested for holding a memorial for the Tamil victims of Sri Lankan ethnic strife, at Marina here without permission.

Subsequently, on May 28 the City Police Commissioner had passed an order detaining them under the Goondas Act on teh ground that they were involved in activities prejudicial to the maintenance of public order.
Earlier, the petitioners had contended that the detention order was "illegal, unconstitutional and passed without due application of mind" and sought it to be quashed.
