Congress today hit back at BJP for its criticism of Rahul Gandhi's push for the ordinance route for anti-corruption measures, saying that these could not be passed in Parliament due to constant disruptions by the Opposition party.
As criticism grew over this issue after the ordinances failed to get the Union Cabinet's nod yesterday, party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi maintained that while Rahul and Congress were solidly behind these measures in principle and substance, the ordinances were given a go-by only to respect the procedures.
Singhvi said that Rahul or the party had never pitched for bypassing established procedures and systems.
He said BJP had directly or indirectly obstructed the 15th Lok Sabha which led to Parliament hardly working in the past five years.
The Union Cabinet last night rejected the ordinance route for a set of anti-corruption measures despite pressure from Rahul for bringing such laws.
The Union Cabinet had discussed the issue of these ordinances but it was felt that "full deliberations" are required in Parliament keeping with the "highest traditions of democratic principles".
