The house owner was shell shocked when he saw the hatchlings coming out from a crevice near the footsteps of his house in Lawspet.

Initially the panic-stricken man stoned to death around five hatchlings but sought the help of forest department personnel as the flow of the baby snakes continued unabated.

A team of forest department staff broke open the disused pipeline and found more than 20 hatchlings with the big snake lying inside alive, officials said.

They put the hatchlings and the mother snake into a bucket and shifted them to the department.

An official source said the snakes would be preserved.

Russell's viper is one of the most poisonous snake and its bite can lead to kidney failure and death.
