Over 50 Kenyans are missing more than 24 hours after Islamist militants attacked a coastal town and left dozens dead, the Red Cross said today.
"The 52 missing persons are those reported by relatives as missing," Kenya Red Cross spokesman Wariko Waita told AFP, adding they hoped they hoped they would show up alive.
Scores of residents fled into the remote bush and forests following the attack on Sunday in which at least 49 people were killed, with more fleeing a second assault on Monday in which 15 people died.
Relatives may have reported people missing as they are unable to contact them, Waita said.
"Others could be part of the casualties, we are taking each case very seriously," Waita said.
"On the first few days, we tend to get so many cases reported as missing, but then some are positively identified" as alive, he added.
