Over 8,000 'out-of-school' children were detected in a one-day survey carried out in the city by school teachers, health workers and education department officials today.
The initiative saw around 14,000 staff being deployed by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to carry out the survey, an MCGM official said.
The 'out-of-school' children included 3,800 boys and over 4,100 girls, he added.
While some surveyors said they were able to find such children in some slums, others maintained that they were unable to find any child who was not going to a school.
