Over 92 EVMs malfunctioned, replaced in Assam

At least 92 EVMs malfunctioned and were replaced today during the first day of Lok Sabha polls in five constituencies in Assam.
Election Commission officials said that the number was likely to go up as information from many interior places was yet to be received.
The highest number of malfunctioning EVMs was reported from Jorhat constituency, the home turf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
Jorhat Returning Officer Vishal Vasant Solanki told PTI "We have changed 36 machines at different places. Besides, some other machines developed some snag that were corrected by engineers."
Tezpur Returning Officer Lalit Gogoi said 19 machines did not work properly in the constituency and were replaced.
"We have replaced 14 in Tezpur and one in Bihpuria. Two units were changed in Biswanath Chariali and Gohpur," he added.
Lakhimpur Returning Officer Gaurav Bothra said 14 EVMs were replaced.
"There were some glitches in a few other EVMs also, but our engineers corrected them immediately," he said.
Kaliabor Returning Officer Deepak Kumar Baruah said EVMs were changed in Nagaon, Chamuguri, Rupahi Hat and Kaliabor.
"We have replaced a total of 12 machines," Bothra said.
Dibrugarh Returning Officer Aruna Rajoria said 11 machines were replaced in places like Lahowal, Duliajan, Dibrugarh, Tingkhong and Chabua.
An estimated 72 per cent of the 64.4 lakh voters peacefully exercised their franchise in 8,588 polling stations for five Lok Sabha seats in the state sealing the electoral fate of 51 contestants.
