Owen Chadwick, historian of Christianity, dies at 99

Scholar and priest Owen Chadwick, whose works explored the history of Christianity, has died at the age of 99.
Chadwick's family said in a death notice in the Telegraph newspaper that he died peacefully at home in Cambridge, southern England, on July 17.
Chadwick studied at Cambridge and spent much of his career in the university town. He was master of Selwyn College between 1956 and 1983 and university vice-chancellor from 1969 to 1971. For 14 years from 1968, he was Regius professor of modern history at Cambridge.
Chadwick was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1941 after experiencing a religious awakening partly inspired by imprisoned anti-Nazi German cleric Martin Niemoller. His books included "The Reformation," ''The Victorian Church" and "The Secularization of the European Mind in the 19th Century.
