Pak, Afghan DGMOs discuss border issue

The Afghan DGMO, leading an eight-member military delegation, today met his Pakistani counterpart here and discussed recent tensions on the border in the wake of the army operation against Taliban militants in North Waziristan.
The meeting of the two Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMO), Afghanistan's Major General Afzal Aman and Pakistan's Major General Aamer Riaz, was held after last month's visit by the Afghan National Security Advisor to Pakistan when he met army chief General Raheel Sharif and discussed border issues.
Pakistan military said in a statement that the meeting was held at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
"Issue of terrorists' sanctuaries in Kunar and Nuristan provinces of Afghanistan and attack on Pakistani border village and posts from those sanctuaries came under discussion," Pakistan said.

The two sides also discussed the issue of cross border shelling.
Pakistan said that the Afghan delegation was told that Pakistan only fires back in self defence when Pakistani border posts are physically attacked or fired upon by terrorists from Afghan territory and no indiscriminate firing is carried out.

Both sides agreed to build further trust, continue to talk under all circumstances and evolve a robust and effective bilateral border coordination mechanism.
The Afghan delegation included representatives from the Afghan National Security Council (NSC), Afghan military intelligence and Afghan border police.

Pakistan has called for greater cooperation from its western neighbour since its army launched an operation against militants in the North Waziristan tribal region.
Pakistan has demanded that the Afghan government take action against Pakistani Taliban militants allegedly hiding in its border regions.
