Pakistan today announced steps to implement the UN Security Council resolution calling for an arms embargo on the Shia Houthi rebels fighting in war-torn Yemen, freezing their assets and imposing travel ban on them.
The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on April 14 under chapter VII of the UN Charter on the situation in Yemen.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said today that Pakistan will take all measures to fully implement the provisions of the UN Security Council resolution on the situation in Yemen in line with its international obligations.
"In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today issued SRO 324(I)/ 2015 in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 of the United Nations (Security Council) Act, 1948 (XIV of 1948) to implement assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo and other related obligations in accordance with the relevant provisions of the UN Security Council Resolutions on Yemen," the spokesperson said.
Analysts believe that the decision has been taken to deflect some of the pressure by Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries which are asking Pakistan to provide troops for the Yemen conflict.
Pakistan's parliament has asked the government to stay neutral and only intervene if there was direct threat to the integrity of close ally Saudi Arabia.
