India has sought consular access for a city engineer, who is in Pakistan Army's custody, and asked Islamabad to ensure his safety and security, Eternal Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today said.
Hamid Nehal Ansari, who was missing for over three years, was later found to be in custody of Pakistan Army and facing trial in military court. His mother Fouzia today met Swaraj here and sought update on her son.
"We have asked for consular access for Hamid from Pakistan and have told them to ensure his safety and security," Swaraj told reporters after meeting Fouzia.
"A military court is currently conducting his trial and thus we have not yet been able to talk to Hamid. We are trying to get access to him and get Fouzia talk to her son," she added.
Fouzia, talking to reporters later, said she is confident that her son will be brought back to the country after being proved innocent.
"I am thankful to Sushma ji for making effort to bring my son back home. Until now, there was no news of him. At least now we know he is there. Sushma ji has assured that soon my son will return home," she said.
"I am sure he will prove innocent and brought back soon. We are hoping all legal hurdles are cleared soon," she added.
Hamid, then 27, left home on November 5, 2012, claiming he was headed to Afghanistan in search of a job.
But his family later came to know from officials and associates that he was in love with a woman from the Kohat region of western Pakistan, and had decided to cross over to prevent her marriage with another man.
His parents later found out that Hamid was acing court trial in Pakistan on unspecified charges.
