"We feel that such senseless acts would only inspire hatred and violence in the world. It is the collective responsibility of all governments and institutions to work closely on promoting harmony, peace and unity among people of all faiths," Foreign Office spokesman Moazzam Khan said in a statement.

The Senate or upper house of parliament unanimously adopted a resolution that condemned the desecration of the Quran by Jones and called on the UN Secretary General to frame plans for promoting religious harmony before "rationality was completely destroyed".

The resolution was moved by Senator Farhatullah Babar, the spokesman for President Farhatullah Babar, after the House suspended the rules of business for the purpose.

"This House has noted with grave concern that religious tolerance was fast eroding across national boundaries and religious divides, that this disharmony was increasing and it seemed to corroborate the ominous theory of a clash of civilizations," the resolution said.

"The House believes that values of tolerance and harmony cannot be fragmented and compartmentalized into Islamic or Christian etc. This House also cautions against making exceptions and selectivity in such cases as it will shake faith in the universal norms of the UN Charter," it further said.
