Pandemonium prevailed in Karnataka Assembly today as the Opposition stalled the proceedings for the second consecutive day over the alleged suicide by a DySP as the war of words between a minister and BJP members spun out of control leading to ugly scenes.
Environment Minister B Ramanath Rai and BJP members were locked in a wordy duel with both trading charges and at one point even moving menacingly towards each other.
Losing his cool in the midst of heated exchanges, Rai tried to barge towards opposition MLAs but he was stopped by Congress MLAs and Ministers.
Agitated by his action, BJP members also moved towards Rai's seat and were seen indulging in a wordy duel with him, with Opposition BJP leader Jagadish Shettar calling Rai's action as "goondagiri" and "unbecoming of a Minister".
The trouble started when Rai tried to defend government by interrupting BJP's K G Bopaiah's speech duringthe debate on the alleged suicide by Mangaluru DySP M K Ganapathy, who was found hanging from a ceiling fan at a hotel in Madikeri of Kodagu district on July 7.
Stalling House proceedings since yesterday, BJP has been demanding resignation of Bengaluru Development Minister K J George and action against A M Prasad (IG-Intelligence) and Pranab Mohanty (IGP-Lokayukta) who were named by Ganapathy in a local TV interview before his death, saying they would be responsible "if anything happens to me."
As Rai interrupted Bopaiah, BJP members objected to it, but the minister hit back asking who they were to question him.
Angered by this, BJP members, including Laxman Sangappa, Savadi had a heated exchange with Rai.
Rai reminded Savadi that he was caught watching a blue film in the House when he was a minister in the Yeddyurappa ministry.
Savadi said, "I had resigned for my mistake, do you have the guts to ask Minister George to resign?" while another BJP MLA C T Ravi came to Savadi's rescue.
Signalling at Ravi, Rai made some comments about the death of Chikkamagalur DySP Kalappa Handibag, named as accused in a kidnapping case, who was found hanging in his father-in-law's house in Belagavi district on July 5.
As the argument went on, Rai tried tobarge towards the
opposition side from his seat but was stopped by Congress members.
Angered by the Minister's act, BJP members proceeded towards the Minister's seat and had acrimonious exchanges with him.
Ministers H K Patil and R V Deshpande intervened, while Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asked in a raised voice as to what the marshals were doing.
The Congress and BJP members then hit out at each other with both accusing the other of crossing the limit.
Speaker K B Koliwad then adjourned the House for lunch.
Earlier participating in the debate on alleged suicide by Ganapathy, JD(S) leader and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy demanded that government take action considering his statement to a TV channel before death as a dying declaration.
Questioning police version that Ganapathy's death was due to depression because of family issues, he said government was indulging in "covering up" the case.
