Paswan sought changing the status of the universities in Patna, Bhagalpur and Vaishali into Central universities, noting that their upgradation had become necessary, sources in the HRD Ministry said.

Paswan's demand comes at a time when the Centre has allocated two Central universities to Bihar -- one at Gaya and other at Motihari -- keeping with the wishes of the Nitish Kumar-led government.

Bihar is the second exception made by the Union government of setting up two Central universities in a particular state, the first being Jammu and Kashmir.

The LJP chief was accompanied by Patna University Vice-Chancellor Sambhu Nath Singh, who claimed that he was being attacked by students.

Singh was attacked by a group of Patna University students on August 15 when he was at his house. The students were protesting against the new arrangement of hostel accommodation.

To check the menace of ragging, the administration had decided to allot class-wise accommodation to the students in college hostels.
