Powerloom industry in the state has been facing severe crisis for more than one-and-half years now due to various circumstances including government policies, PDEXCIL vice chairman Purushottam Vanga said.
Vanga, who is also president of Bhiwandi Padmanagar Powerloom Weavers Association, said powerloom units in the state were running only to 25 to 30 per cent of their capacity due poor demand for weaved clothes.
"We have several times made representations before the Centre and state government listing our demands. It was only last week that we took out a protest morcha in Mumbai, after which the minister (state Industries) assured us to give us a hearing. We will be meeting Subash Desai very soon," he said.
He also said the government should ensure that the dumping (of their produce) by China should be checked.
There are around 12 lakh looms in the state, out of which maximum are in Bhiwandi and workers coming from states like Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh are returning without jobs due to unfavourable market conditions.
