People continue to throng banks in TN

Public and private sector banks across Tamil Nadu continued to witness large number of people thronging the branches today as cash vending machines were either non-functional or ran dry within hours.
Some banks faced shortage of currency leading to frayed tempers as people were told to wait for 'hours'.
Some other customers turned back disappointed as banks could not dispense cash following shortage of currency.
"I have been waiting for nearly 45 minutes in this queue. Now the bank officials have said we need to wait for more time as cash has gone dry. We are waiting for further information. We do not know how long we have to wait," a customer, who was waiting at a public sector bank, said.

Small traders, including kirana shops and vegetable vendors, who largely depend on small currency were the worst hit, hardly doing any business.
In line with the government's decision, some bank branches have started applying indelible ink on the right hand index finger of people who are exchanging notes in banks.

To ease the situation and targeted at those who require Rs 2000 notes, the Centre had yesterday said 2,500 petrol stations would dispense cash upto Rs 2,000 through debit card.
Responding to it, the Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association said it is yet to begin the process in Tamil Nadu as there was "no clarity".

"We have not started it yet. Many (fuel outlets) are still not updated on the modus operandi. Only select outlets are being asked to. Clarity yet to come," an official said.
Meanwhile, DMK, the main opposition in the state assembly, has requested the Election Commission to give "appropriate instructions" to banks in assembly constituencies -- Thanjavur, Aravakurichi and Thirupparankundram -- which goes to polls tomorrow, on marking of indelible mark.
"In order to avoid any confusion and to prevent loss of valuable right of voters, due to any wrong mark of indelible ink on left hand instead of right hand, it is necessary to give appropriate instructions to all banks situated in the three assembly constituencies," DMK Organising Secretary, R S Bharathi said in a letter to Chief Election Commissioner, Nasim Zaidi.
