Peruvian authorities say former President Alejandro Toledo has been arrested in the United States. He's wanted on corruption charges in his homeland.

The attorney general's office in Peru said Tuesday that Toledo's detention followed a Peruvian extradition request because of alleged corruption linked to the giant Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

Toledo was Peru's president from 2001 to 2006 and has lived in California in recent years. He was a visiting scholar at Stanford University in 2017.

He is wanted in his home country on accusations of taking USD 20 million in bribes from Odebrecht. He has denied wrongdoing.
