The 56-year-old actor took on the role after Matt Smith's exit in the 2013 Christmas special, 'The Time of the Doctor', said The Hollywood Reporter.
"Yes, he's confirmed," showrunner Steven Moffat said of Capaldi after an event in London to mark the DVD release of the eighth season,
The Scottish writer, who also shepherds hit BBC series 'Sherlock', added that Jenna Coleman who plays the Doctor's companion had not signed yet to return.
The series eight finale aired on BBC One on November 8 to an overnight audience of 5.45 million.
