Petition in HC questions appointment of law university VC

A quo warranto petition has been filed in the Madras High Court questioning the legality of the recent appointment of P Vanangamudi as the Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University.
The petitioner, Madurai-based advocate J Jeyakumaran, contended that Vanangamudi did not possess requisite academic qualifications and experience.
The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice R K Agrawal and Justice K Ravichandrabaabu, ordered issue of notices to the state government and the Bar Council of India, directing them to file their counter-affidavit in three weeks.
The bench adjourned the matter after four weeks for further hearing.
The petitioner said Vanangamudi had post-graduation in history and political science, and was a professor teaching the subjects in the university before his appointment.

Noting that he obtained law degree during the course of his employment, the petition said, "he never made any full-time and substantial contribution to law. The degree obtained by him during the course of his employment cannot be construed as full-time degree-holder within the rules framed by the Bar Council of India and the UGC.
