PIL against 'maladministration' of govt dog breeding centre

A PIL has been filed in the Madras High Court against alleged maladministration of government's dog breeding centre, contending that it was closed on the basis of 'false propaganda' unmindful of the fact that it would involve abandoning sick and ailing animals.
When the matter came up for hearing, the First Bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Kumar Agrawal and Justice M Sathyanarayanan issued notice to the authorities concerned and posted the matter for next week.
E Seshan, submitted in his PIL that the centre was set up three decades ago to safeguard native breeds in the state. About 50 types and varieties were used by the state government for breeding. At present the number has come down only to three breeds -- Kombai, Rajapalayam and Chippipparai.

He said these breeds could be trained for hunting and guarding.
He alleged that the dog breeding centre at Saidapet area was maladministered, resulting in diseases of dogs and cruelty to animals. He also alleged the animals were not given good food and treatment and were put in confinement.
He sought a direction to authorities to ensure that the native breeds at this centre are provided proper medical treatment and food, exercise and maintenance.
