A PIL was today moved in the Delhi High Court claiming there is no mechanism in the Delhi Police for complainants to communicate with investigating officers through email to ascertain status of their cases.

The plea came up for hearing before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar which, due to paucity of time, could not take it up today and listed it for August 29.

The PIL by a lawyer, Praveen Kumar Aggarwal, has sought creation of a website for each police station and details of email ids of all officers posted there, so that complainants need not visit the station each time they want an update regarding their complaint.

The petitioner has said that investigating officers (IOs) often have to attend courts during the day and are available only in the evenings when it is not convenient for many complainants, especially women, to visit police stations.

"Website for each police station along with emails of the officers can facilitate transparency, access and cost efficiency in functioning of the Delhi Police," the plea said.

It also said that international best practices promote use of information technology for enhancing direct communication between complainant and investigating agency or officer.
