The Centre was today asked by the Delhi High Court to reply to a PIL challenging introduction of foreign languages in place of Sanskrit in its schools by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS).
A bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice Jayant Nath issued notices to Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), CBSE and KVS and sought their responses by May 15 on a PIL seeking quashing of the circular issued by KVS in 2011 on the issue.
"The impugned notification of the Defendant No 3 (KVS) is bad in law and ultra-vires to the Constitution of India," the PIL filed by the Sanskrit Shikshak Sangh through counsel Monica Arora said.
"KVS had introduced foreign languages like German, French, Chinese and Spanish in place of Sanskrit as third language from the academic session 2011-12 in classes VI-VIII and has also directed that TGT Sanskrit teacher in Kendriya Vidyalaya to take training in these foreign languages so that they may teach these languages in due course in place of Sanskrit.
