A PIL filed in the Gujarat High Court today has sought a commission to assess the damage caused to public properties during the violence during Patel community's agitation for quota in Gujarat last week and demanded that a compensation should be recovered from its leader Hardik Patel.
The public interest litigation was filed by city-based lawyer Charudatt Vyas.
"The state government has not initiated any action to investigate and assess the damages caused to the public and private properties and to award compensation though the guidelines have been framed by the Supreme Court in 2009," it says.
It seeks appointment of a commission "to investigate, assess and to fix responsibility of Hardik and his associates for the damage caused to the public and private properties as also to recover expenses incurred by the state government to take into control (sic) the situation of law and order".
The petition, filed through advocate Chetan Pandya, notes that Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) and Akhil Bhartiya Sardar Patel Seva Dal started the agitation. Hardik and his associates Chirag Patel and Dinesh Patel organised a rally on August 25 at GMDC Ground here where he made a provocative speech, it alleges.
"On account of the provocative speech given by Hardik and unwarranted actions or inaction of the police...Peaceful public meeting suddenly turned violent," it says.
The PIL refers to local media reports stating that properties worth Rs 100 crore were damaged.
It will come up for hearing in due course.
